Coping is the process of cutting a notch or profile into the end of a structural beam so it fits cleanly around an intersecting member -- typically where a secondary beam frames into the web of a primary girder. Done by hand, coping means marking the beam, cutting with a torch or saw, and grinding to fit -- a slow process where accuracy depends heavily on the individual fitter.
Why Coping Accuracy Matters
A poorly coped beam end leaves gaps at the connection, which either forces the erection crew to grind and fit on site or, worse, gets welded over a gap that weakens the joint. On a project with hundreds of beam-to-beam connections, even small per-piece fit-up problems compound into real schedule delays during erection.
How CNC Coping Changes the Process
An automated I-beam coping machine reads the copy profile directly from a CAD file (commonly via DSTV format exported from Tekla or similar detailing software) and cuts the web and flange notches in one automated pass, with the same repeatability on the hundredth piece as the first.
