Steel channel and angle sections are workhorse profiles in structural fabrication, but they share a common bottleneck: after cutting, someone still has to mark where holes go, where a part connects to its neighbor, and which face is which -- traditionally with a soapstone marker or punch, based on a paper drawing.
Combining Cutting and Marking
A CNC laser or plasma system programmed from the same CAD file used to generate the cut path can also etch or lightly mark reference lines, part numbers, and fold/weld indicators directly onto the material in the same pass. Because the marks come from the identical toolpath data as the cut, there's no separate manual transcription step where a measurement or part ID can get copied incorrectly.
Where This Matters Most
The benefit scales with part count and complexity. On a small job with a handful of identical channels, manual marking is a minor inconvenience. On a structural package with hundreds of channel and angle pieces going to different sub-assemblies, automated cut-and-mark removes a step that would otherwise need a dedicated layout technician working from drawings -- and removes the transcription errors that come with it.
